The History of Mexico’s Independence Day

In 1521, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortes conquered the native Aztecs in Mexico and the country became a Spanish colony. From that point on, Spain ruled Mexico for nearly 300 years until the early 1800’s. In the early 1800’s, Mexicans revolted against Spanish rule to earn their independence. In the city of Dolores, Mexico, Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell and gave the call to arms. This historic moment signaled the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. Today, Mexico Independence Day (known as Día de la Independencia in Spanish) is a celebration that begins on September 15th right before midnight, to ring in the early hours of the official holiday on September 16th.

El Grito

Father Miguel Hidalgo’s declaration of Mexico’s independence was memorialized by his famous cry of “Viva Mexico.” Also known as El Grito, each year on September 15th at midnight people throughout Mexico come together to celebrate and reenact the famous cry in plazas throughout the country. Today, Mexico continues the tradition of “El Grito” the night before the celebration of independence. The celebration is sure to include lots of music, dancing and fireworks to commemorate the special day. In Spain, the new government initially promised reforms to appease the Mexican revolutionaries. However, the new Spanish viceroy was forced to accept Mexican independence in 1820.
