There are so many wonderful things to see and do in Puerto Vallarta, and one of the undisputable highlights is the famed Malecón boardwalk.

The scenic highlight of any vacation to Puerto Vallarta, this mile-long sea wall has two functions: firstly it protects the many bars, stores and restaurants in the center from the sea. More importantly, however, it is a hub of social life for locals and tourists alike. You can take a walk with your dog, have a coffee, dine with a lover, walk with your kids and grandparents, or meditate the sunset.

The Malecón is now more comfortable than ever to walk after it received a refreshing revamp in 2011. The renovation project focused on the beauty and atmosphere of the historic boardwalk, making it more attractive to pedestrians. The whole of the Malcon is closed to cars and the ground has been leveled making it easy for strollers and wheelchairs. Visitors and locals can now meander effortlessly amidst palm trees, bugambilia and flowerbeds overflowing with exotic plants!

Art lovers will enjoy the sculptures that line the oceanfront along the Malecon. There are a number of fascinating artworks showcased on the Malecon designed by various Mexican Artists. To learn more about these sculptures and the art in the area, you can take a tour with an English speaking guide from Galeria Pacifico. Otherwise, see the works for yourself and make your own interpretations.

Another sight you cannot miss along the Malecon is the fabulous Our Lady of Guadalupe church, whose crown features on Puerto Vallarta postcards everywhere. Take a moment to visit the church or sit in the plaza to watch the world go by. In this area, you will also find the outdoor amphitheatre, where local shows are held for free. There are plenty of stalls selling typical Mexican treats and snack in this area too.

The Malecon extends even further past more restaurants and across the River Cuale, from where you can see the new pier at Los Muertos Beach. The pier lights up in colorful array at night and is a modern addition to Puerto Vallarta’s shores. From here you can book tours to other beaches along the coast or take a water taxi to some of the more popular beaches that can only be reached by sea.
