Catfishing is when spammers and fraudsters create a false profile and then start finding matches on dating apps like Tinder and others like it. Once they find a match, which is highly probable as the fake photo and profile is deliberately attractive, the scammer then starts communicating with you.  Sometimes a robot will send you links for phishing scams or you might be targeted by a human scammer who will probably get you to start chatting on Skype or email, pretending to be in love with you before asking for money.

Apart from being a victim of scams similar to the abovementioned Tinder catfishing scam, you can fall prey to false advertising scams such as when a reputable airline offers free flights or a leading designer brand offers cheap sunglasses etc. While discounts are frequently advertised on social networks, this scam is a deliberate posted by a false profile pretending to be the company in question. Once you click on the fake link, the scammers have access to your computer’s details and information.

Ebay Scams

While there are many legitimate sellers on sites like Ebay, you should be aware of the possible scams such as the refund scam where a buyer bids on your item, you receive payment and you send the item in perfect condition. However, the scammer already has a broken version of the same exact item and then disputes that you sent a product that doesn’t work or which is broken. You are then forced by Ebay to refund the product.

AirBnB Scams

As a rule, if you make your payment through the AirBnB website, there is little chance of being involved in a scam. However, when making payments outside of the site you put yourself at risk of arriving to your destination to find you have accommodation in a non-existent apartment.

Timeshare scams

Timeshare scams

The main timeshare scams are those involved with the resale timeshare market or cancelling your timeshare. Resale scams might mean you purchasing an invalid membership, or one that has a huge maintenance fee debt that you need to pay before you can use the timeshare. Cancellation scams claim to be able to cancel your timeshare for a fee when all they do is redirect your mail so that you do not realize that you have defaulted on your payments.
