Get to Know Tequila: Mexico’s Shining Star

Tequila, Jalisco is where it all started.  This lovely town is famous due to the production of beloved tequila. Located at the base of the Tequila Volcano, visitors will be in awe of the remarkable blue agave fields. Back in the 1500’s, the native people in the region started using the blue agave plant to make a fermented drink. The blue agave plant is the main ingredient in tequila. Later, Spanish conquistadors arrived and started distilling tequila into a fermented beverage. In 1530, the area was known as Santiago de Tequila, and was a village founded by Franciscan monks. The first inhabitants in the area decided to revolt against Spanish rule in 1541. A man named Friar Juan Calero tried to keep the situation calm, but was killed by rocks and arrows. Later his body was hung on a stone idol in the village as a reminder of the violent event. Today, the powerful liquor is extremely very popular across the world. In addition, the town of Tequila has been named a World Heritage Site thanks to its interesting history and importance. Lastly, Tequila was given the title of magical town or “Pueblo Magico” in 2003, which is a high distinction issued by the Mexican government.
